NOTICE OF PUBLIC HEARING
Notice is hereby given that the Town Council of the Town of Wilkesboro will hold a Public Hearing on Monday, August 31, 2026, at 5:3·0 pm at Wilkesboro Town Hall, 203 West Main Street Wilkesboro, North Carolina, to receive public comment regarding a proposed amendment to, Section 156.415 -Stormwater Protection of the Town of Wilkesboro Zoning Ordinance. The proposed amendment is intended to revise stormwater regulations and permitting thresholds applicable to development activities within the Town of Wilkesboro and its extraterritorial jurisdiction. The amendment is being considered following the Town Council's adoption of a temporary moratorium to evaluate and align local stormwater requirements with applicable state regulations. All interested persons are invited to attend the hearing and present comments concerning the proposed amendment.
As part of the budget process that became effective 07/01/2026, the Wilkesboro Town Council increased the monthly garbage fee from $10.00 to $16.00 to cover the increased Landfill Fees and Recycling (picked up at curbside) Fees charged by our vendors to the Town. The $16.00 fee covers 1 trash bin and 1 recycle bin from the town. Each new set of bins is charged an additional $16.00 per month.
Recruitment process is being managed by Western Piedmont Council of Government with a deadline of July 9, 2026.

The objectives and purposes of the Wilkesboro Planning Board shall be as set forth in North Carolina General Statutes, Chapter 160A, Sections 361, 362 and 363, as amended, in those acts of the legislature which comprise the corporate charter of the Town of Wilkesboro, and powers and duties as may be from time to time delegated to said board by resolution or ordinance by the Wilkesboro Town Council within the limitations of the above-cited statutes.
The Planning Board for the Town of Wilkesboro fulfills the following responsibilities and duties:
Initiates and performs future planning activities for the Town of Wilkesboro City Limits and the Extraterritorial Jurisdiction (ETJ) in conjunction with the Planning Department
The Planning Board is an advisory board to the Town Council; the Planning board makes advisory recommendations to Town Council related to the following:
Zoning Ordinance and Town Code Amendments
Subdivision Review
Rezoning Review
Develop and recommend policies, ordinances, and administrative procedures
Make studies of the Town of Wilkesboro and its jurisdiction and then prepare and adopt plans
Standing committees and ad hoc committees may be appointed by the Chairman from time to time for purposes and terms that the Planning Board approves.
Conduct any other business deemed appropriate.

Regular meetings of the Planning Board shall be held on the last Tuesday of each month at 5:15 pm at the Wilkesboro Town Hall provided that, if the Chairman so directs, meetings may be held at any other time or place in the Town. Absence from three or more consecutive meetings or six meetings within the space of a year shall be deemed sufficient cause to ask for that member’s resignation.
Special meetings of the Planning Board may be called at any time by the Chairman, provided that timely notice is given to each member.
Whenever there is no business for the Planning Board, the Chairman may dispense with a regular meeting by giving timely notice to all members.
