Wilkesboro Issues a Burn Ban

BURN BAN IN EFFECT FOR THE TOWN OF WILKESBORO

Effective immediately, the Town of Wilkesboro Fire Department Fire Marshal, in coordination with the Wilkes County Fire Marshal’s Office, has issued a local burn ban on ALL outdoor burning within the town limits of Wilkesboro.

This ban prohibits any open burning within 100 feet of any structure, regardless of previously issued burn permits or existing town ordinances. Prohibited activities include, but are not limited to:

• Recreational fires
• Portable outdoor fireplaces|
• Burning of yard debris 
• Outdoor fire pits

In addition, all outdoor burning beyond 100 feet of a structure is also prohibited due to a statewide burn ban issued by the North Carolina Forest Service, which takes effect at 6:00 PM this evening and applies to all 100 counties in North Carolina.

This local burn ban is issued in accordance with the North Carolina Fire Code, Chapter 3, Section 307, which authorizes the prohibition of open burning when atmospheric conditions or local circumstances make such fires hazardous. Current dry weather conditions have significantly increased the risk of wildfire.

This burn ban is effective immediately and supersedes all Town of Wilkesboro burning ordinances until officially lifted.This burn ban will remain in effect until sufficient rainfall reduces fire danger. The ban will only be lifted following guidance and recommendations from the North Carolina Forest Service.
