It’s Preservation Month! Established in 1973 by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, the event is co-sponsored by local preservation groups, state historical societies, businesses, and civic organizations across the country. During the month of May many events are planned to promote historic places for the purpose of instilling national and community pride, promoting heritage tourism, and showing the social and economic benefits of historic preservation. Thousands of people participate annually in Preservation Month celebrations.
Historic Downtown Wilkesboro was established in 2007 by an act of the Town Council. This was done to protect what remains of the Wilkesboro of our forebears, namely the Wilkes Heritage Museum and its environs. The preservation and enhancement of Historic Downtown Wilkesboro is done not only in the name of cultural revitalization and economic prosperity, but for the enrichment of our community fabric.
